The 'Self' in Portraiture

KLPA is excited to announce the Interim Edition Open Call this year examining and highlighting the power and artistic expressions inherent in self-portraiture. Photographers have turned their cameras on themselves ever since Robert Cornelius captured a daguerreotype self-portrait in 1839 at the dawn of photography. Seeing themselves via their chosen medium with roles as the photographer and sitter, may reveal, enrich and aspire to self-discovery as artists.

This Interim Edition prize is open for entries from 1 September to 6 October and the winners and finalists will be selected by a panel of international judges in mid-October 2024. The Top 30 finalists will have their portraits screened at selected venues by our partner festivals in 2024 and 2025, reaching a wide international audience and also being promoted online to our followers. A print exhibition is planned for 2025 at Hin Bus Depot in George Town, Penang, Malaysia.

Inward Gaze

Since the formation of KLPA in 2009, our annual themes have consistently explored the outward gaze of photographers. The portrait subject is nearly always in front of the photographer. In this edition, we turn our gaze inwards to face the camera, photographing ourselves, as provocateur, protagonist, director and subject all at once.

Impress the judges with originality, experimentation and personal expression. Some of the most influential self-portrait artists of the time have chosen various approaches to portray themselves. From the experimental and avant-garde styles of Claude Cahun and Man Ray to the whimsical and surreal portraits of Francesca Woodman, self-portraiture can delve deep into the photographer's psyche to reveal strengths or frailties that might otherwise be suppressed.

Ode to Self

More than often, creating self-portraits requires planning and certain self-intrusion, introspection, creativity and the placement of the camera in or out of the frame. Encroaching into our personal space may open up new visions of expression. We welcome submissions from all genres of photography - including street, documentary and fine art work.

Open to all international photographers at all levels, we hope to elevate the art of self-portraiture beyond the selfie.
