SORA - This is Sora, whom I photographed for a series about identity. Sora has both Dutch and Moluccan roots. The first ten years of her life she never had anything to do with her Moluccan background until her parents met each other again at her age of ten, got married and she got interested in the other side of her story. It brought her a more varied picture of who she was. I wanted to portray her in the tradition of the old Dutch masters, with her undeniable oriental background to emphasize the power of our multicultural society. And the funny thing is, when you dive into it, lots of us have ancestors from around the globe. Some closer, some further away. You might discover roots in unexpected places as well. Something to think about in our critical society.
